Making the Work of Medical Librarians Easier and More Effective in Helping with Evidence-based Health Care Quality Improvements Effective and efficient searching of scientific research is one of the essential components of evidence-based practice. It important to know methods for successfully obtaining the needed medical evidence, and it is important to understand how basic study design matters in addressing different medical questions such as those dealing with therapies and patient safety. Further, medical librarians can play a crucial role in guiding clinicians, researchers and others in finding and obtaining needed medical evidence. Also key is an awareness that most of the scientific research in the medical literature is not valid or clinically useful, and most health care professionals — including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, researchers and other allied heath care professions — frequently do not get basic training in evidence-based medicine principles. Therefore, this affects both the quality of the scientific research produced in the medical literature and the use of scientific information. Bottom-line: There is a difference between knowing what is reported and knowing what is valid & clinically useful. We can help you help others make this distinction.
We can provide you with effective training and advice that can help you increase your abilities to be an effective partner in helping address these key problems and in helping improve health care clinical improvement activities including the conduct of research, creating a systematic review, developing evidence-based clinical guidelines, enhancing medical decision making with effective decision support, identifying patient safety information, assisting with formulary management needs and medical technology assessment and developing appropriate performance measurement metrics including pay-for-performance (P4P). All activities vital to health care quality. |
