Program — Critical Appraisal Demystified: What You
Don’t Know Can Hurt Your Patients
There
can be a lifetime's worth of difference between “knowing
the evidence” and knowing what evidence is valid &
clinically useful. Before many Delfini training programs,
a shocking 70 percent of clinical pharmacists fail a simple
pre-test covering three questions basic to understanding
how to read a study article. Not after attending this program.
This program covers the essentials of performing critical
appraisal of therapeutic interventions in a comprehensive
way with a strong focus on identifying studies at high risk
of bias using a practical, simplified approach and presented
in an entertaining fashion. Presenters have a world-wide
reputation for rigor in evaluating studies and a highly
engaging teaching style that keeps this material fresh and
anything but boring or too complex. .
Topics In Brief
-
Evidence-based medicine and its import explained
-
The impact of bias on study results
-
Issues with study design

Program — The “How To”s of Conducting and/or
Participating in Efficient, Effective Evidence-based Clinical
Quality Improvement Projects: How to Make Your Project Doable
& Successful
Delfini has extensive experience in both
conducting and facilitating evidence-based clinical quality
improvement activities such as guideline development and
quality improvement projects. This is where healthcare leadership,
searching, critical appraisal, clinical practice guidelines,
support for medical decision-making, implementation, health
care information systems and other innovations come together
to improve health care quality. And pharmacists play an
important role in making these activities be their most
successful.
Topics In Brief

ELEMENTS OF SUCCESS FOR AN EVIDENCE-BASED
GUIDELINE AND CLINICAL QUALITY
IMPROVEMENT PROJECT:
Kaiser Permanente Hawaii (KPHI): Prevention of Venous
Thromboemobolism (VTE) in Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement
Conversation with Karen Ching MD, EBM Director & Nephrologist
Delfini:
This was such a successful project. What made things work?
Karen:
This was an important project, and it was successful because
each of the members of the workgroup was engaged in the
process and participated fully. It was also helpful to have
group leaders representing … differing viewpoints.
It was also successful because we were able to overcome
the barriers … with the right support. It also can
be intimidating to approach a vast body of medical literature,
especially one that is controversial. Having facilitators
like you, Mike and Sheri, really made the difference; you
did an incredible amount of work behind the scenes. You
guided the group through the process and made the work of
EBM easy and fun.

"It
has been six months since the Delfini Group customized an
evidence-based training program to help us change our processes
for drug reviews. We have already experienced real success
which we expect to be sustainable and which will improve
the care we provide to our patients and our ability to use
our resources optimally. The concepts and skills learned
in the training - along with the tools and process steps
- were invaluable to us and have helped us transform our
system. Highly recommended!" David Holloway, MD, Senior
Vice President & Chief Quality Officer, Parkview Health,

"I've
been attending seminars with the Delfini Group since 2001.
They have played an instrumental role in the enhancement of
our P & T process. Their programs mix together an enthusiasm
for evidence-based medicine with factual market-driven ideas
to efficiently utilize the available resources. The Delfini
programs motivated me to plan a health system retreat in 2002.
The retreat was an opportunity for multiple P & T committee
members (hospital, primary care clinics, health plan) and
supporting staff to explore the importance of evidence-driven
decisions in the P & T process. The program included Delfini
presentations and working sections introducing tools to improve
efficiency. Of course the retreat was just a beginning, a
starting point to build upon. And build we have! Our P &
T presentation format and discussions have become more efficient,
and we have standardized decision algorithms that help during
crossroad discussions for an individual therapy. The evidence
will never have all the answers. But this process brings a
framework of support that has improved efficiency and, I believe,
a greater satisfaction for committee members with the difficult
task of P & T therapy evaluations and literature review."

"I
believe the evidence-based approach used by Delfini is the
right way to approach inappropriate variation in healthcare.
I fully support Delfini’s step-wise approach to assessing
medical technologies....One of the biggest problems in healthcare
is that new diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are
instituted without the support of good science....I can
highly recommend the Delfini faculty..." Doug Dammrose,

"...One
added benefit was the emphasis on evidence to determine cost
effective care, and the balance sheet example. Since I have
been in charge of Medical Economics, some doctors accuse me
of just being interested in saving money. Your presentation
showed that cost effective care can also be the best care.
The osteoporosis example, looking at more than just the drug
costs, was great." Tobie Bresloff, MD, Medical Director
of CareMed Alliance, Saint Francis Health System, Tulsa OK
