Scenario
1. You have just read an article in the New England Journal of Medicine as summarized by the abstract below. (Information is necessarily highly general for this exercise and is to be taken at face value. There are no trick questions here. Assume that you are seriously evaluating this information in your practice.) 2. You are to decide whether you would try out this drug on your patients who seem appropriate candidates for this treatment. Abstract Symptoms of Condition X are sometimes severe enough that people are confined to bed for a period of days. People may be ill for weeks. The disease is highly contagious and, at times, can lead to significant complications especially in the elderly. The side effects of Nuevo-Magico are documented in numerous well-done studies to be very rare – less than 1 percent have an allergic reaction, usually presenting as a mild rash. No long-term adverse effects have been reported. Of the 240 patients treated, 232 patients are asymptomatic within 3-5 days of coming into the doctor’s office. Because of a special program, there is no cost to patients. You are facing a patient right now with Condition X. Are you going to try this drug with your patient?
